A Little About Us

With the celebration of the Golden Jubilee in 2005 a milestone in the history of any Institution S.S.L.N.T. Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Dhanbad, has a glorious heritage of continuous excellence in the field of Women’s education.

In a span of less than sixty years the College has established itself as one of the leading Women’s College in Jharkhand. The College had a modest beginning in the year 1955 as a joint effort by the social workers of Dhanbad, Shri Hirendra Nath Chatterjee & Shri Mriganka Shekhar Mukherjee. It was the year 1955 and the date 19th August when the College started functioning in a single room with 9 students and 2 Lecturers Smt.

Nibha Dutta &Smt. Arunbala Sinha was provided by the Colliery merchant a sum of Rs. 500/-monthly. The present campus on L.C. Road was made available with the Trust established by the leading Industrialists Shri. Chanchani & Shri. Tara. Three hostel and a school bus were made available to the students along with other faculties. The dream of a premier Institute for Women’s education now became reality in Dhanbad as the College developed and progressed academically in a spectacular manner.

The foundation of the main College building was laid by His Excellency the Governor & Chancellor of Bihar on 27th August 1962 Sri. Anant S.Iyengar. The main building of College was inaugurated by the Hon. Late Smt. Indira Gandhi on 11th July 1965, the then Information & Broadcasting Minister of India. The College was affiliated by Bihar University in 1960. In 1961 the College became a part of the Ranchi University. In 1975 the College became a constituent unit of the Ranchi University. In 1992 the College was included in the newly founded Vinoba Bhave University.

The Science Stream of the College became functional in 1966. The Commerce Stream became functional in 1983. The laboratories were established with financial and by the Trustee and under the supervision of an retired and eminent Scientist from CFRI.

In 1984 Post Graduate Classes were introduced in Science & Arts with excellent results as our students claimed the top position in each subject year after year.

The College came to be recognized as one of the best Women’s Colleges in this region and the Golden Jubilee year was observed in 2005.

Many Vocational Courses along with B.Ed. Courses were introduced in 2006-2007 with the objective of all round development in educational eligibility of the students.

A holistic and social awareness programme for the overall development and students contribution to society is aimed for by the administration of the College, Tree Plantation drive.

Education to under-privileged children, campaigning for voting rights were organized by the NCC & NSS wing of the College.

A generous scholarship is Rs. 28,800 available to six students of the College, English Department by the Kakoli Joardar Memorial Foundation(inaugurated). S.S.L.N.T. Mahila Mahavidyalaya is the only College in the region to offer the scholarship on the basis of Merit & Poverty.

In future the College will provide numerous opportunities to the students and contribute to the education and improvement of Women.
